Jessica Pratt - 'This Time Around'

Pratt’s latest single is testament to her singular genius. Over two repeated guitar chords, her voice floats towards you like something from another plane of existence, her lyrics painting a picture of an eternity of sadness. Spellbinding.

Eels - 'The Deconstruction'

The title track of Mark "E" Everett's 12th LP as Eels sounds like a broken nursery rhyme, sweet melodies and fluttering strings masking the song's melancholic core. A captivating return from one of indie-rock's most consistent songwriters.

Ty Segall - 'Fanny Dog'

The first track on Ty Segall's new 19-track album sees the prolific Californian at his most epic, summoning the spirit of Hendrix for a stroll down the Stones' Exile On Main St, all recorded with every needle on the recording desk in the red.

Franz Ferdinand - 'Always Ascending'

Although they released a collaborative album with Sparks in 2015, it has been almost five years since Franz Ferdinand released a record of their own. The title track of their forthcoming fifth album suggests they are determined to make up for lost time, marrying the spiky guitars of their early material to an old school house groove. A welcome return.

Go-Kart Mozart - 'When You're Depressed'

Five years after his last run around as Go Kart Mozart, former Felt leader Lawrence is back with a fresh blast of his singular brand of plastic glam pop. Its chintzy neon synths and first-pumping chorus slightly at odds with a lyric detailing the lows of mental illness: “Never cry, never laugh, don’t clean your teeth, don’t have a bath…”

Alien Stadium - 'This One's For The Humans'

Alien Stadium is a collaborative mini-album between Steve Mason and Primal Scream's Martin Duffy. As the picture suggests, it is four-tracks of out-there concept-rock, following a storyline about an alien invasion. They are "pisshead" aliens, explain the duo. This is the opener, its cosmic groove setting the intergalactic tone.

Boy Azooga - 'Face Behind Her Cigarette'

The brainchild of Cardiff native Davey Newington, Boy Azooga make psychedelic indie-rock with a playful groove. This debut release for Heavenly Recordings is a homage to Nigerian funk icon William Onyeabor. It also sounds a bit like Foals doing a conga.

Euros Childs - 'My Colander'

The former frontman of psychedelic Welsh folk-rockers Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Euros Childs is now a prolific solo artist who has retained his unique brand of excellent strangeness. This track from his forthcoming 13th solo album is a catchy paean to the kitchen utensil no-one can do without when it comes to draining things.

MGMT - 'Little Dark Age'

MGMT's first single in four years is a bewitching slice of gothic electronic-pop. Little Dark Age, the title track from their forthcoming fourth album (it's due out early next year), is accompanied by a sinister video directed by David MacNutt and Nathaniel Axel.

The Orielles - Let Your Dogtooth Grow

Halifax trio The Orielles are in thrall to the jingle jangle of mid-‘80s indie-pop. Their debut album stitches together all the best bits while mercifully circumnavigating any hints of tweeness, as you can hear on the whoah-oh-ohh powered whoosh of Let Your Dogtooth Grow.
