Lars Ulrich has lifted the lid on the motivation behind one of the most unlikely pieces of band merch ever created: Metallica signature skis.
Speaking in an interview in our new issue – Q349 out today (30 June) in print and on digital – the drummer responds to Q’s challenge as to who really wants to hurtle downhill strapped to a pair of planks bearing the heavy metal band’s logo.
“Ha! I could show you hundreds of emails from people where they’re saying, ‘We can’t live without signature Metallica skis.’” laughs Ulrich, whose band will headline the Reading and Leeds Festivals next month.
“No, to be honest with you, it’s kind of cool to show your kids that you have your own skis,” he admits. “If that’s not enough reason, you get a couple of freebies and the 12 people on the planet that are interested in Metallica skis can have that particular thirst quenched. It works out OK.”
