Having turned the tables on his paymasters and started his own record label, Guy Garvey discusses his 'A&R skills' with Q.
Interviewed in our new issue, available now in print and on digital, the Elbow frontman talks Q’s Paul Stokes through his new life as boss of Snug Platters.
“We’ve put out Steve’s music,” he says semi-cryptically. “Steve is the nom-de-plum of Jane Parker who is a Manc, a fantastic, vibrant women and a musician. She’s the only artist so far on the label I have with Jim Chancellor of Fiction Records, Snug Platters.”
After Elbow's experience of getting dropped several times before reaching their status, Garvey says he hopes he can bring something new to the equation now he's other side of the desk.
“I love the label, it’s great to be able to empower someone and draw attention to them,” he explains. “Am I tempted to drop anyone three times to give them the Elbow experience? I supposed you could do that, sell it as a product: Suffer the same disappointments as Elbow for the first decade of your career, it will really toughen you up! [laughs]”
