Newcomer Laura Doggett released her latest single Moonshine at the start of the week (10 November) ahead of her debut album which is due next year. With her life set for all sorts of upheaval in the coming month's she's made Q this Playlist of "Songs for going through change". "These are songs I turned to when I needed to know other people felt the same way and had been through the same things," she explains. "This is when I learnt of the greats in the singer-songwriter world."
Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi "Joni's lyrics are so full of wisdom, but never in a patronising or preachy manner - they're so philosophical and this song about human nature is just perfection - the perfect song to remind you to not take things for granted."
Alanis Morrisette - Ironic "Isn't everything bittersweet? When I feel a bit crappy, I listen to this and know that everyone has bad luck and bad days - but sometimes it's just something to laugh about."
Tracy Chapman - Talkin' Bout A Revolution "Talking about a revolution sounds like a whisper. It's all the small actions that we do every day - we don't have to shout about it, just talking and creating a buzz is enough to change people's ways and thoughts to work together."
Kate Bush - This Woman's Work "All the things I should have said but I never said - we all feel this way. The first time I heard this song I was about 16 and I thought it was the most beautiful and honest piece of music I've ever heard. All about being strong when you feel so weak and sad."
The Ting Tings - Keep Your Head "When I am going crazy in my head, the line you're in it on your own really resonates and hits me square in the feels. I'm always walking in the dark in the rain to this song in my head."
Tom Waits - I Don't Wanna Grow Up "Just feeling scared about getting older, how life becomes about money and material things - being a kid was such a special time and all I wanted to do was get older, but now I wish I'd embraced it."
Nina Simone - Nobody Wants You "It's that feeling of when you're down, and you need someone, they're never there. But when you're up, and couldn't care, they're always there. Typical."
Moby - Porcelain "This song makes me think of my favourite film The Beach. It also gives me this deep feeling in my stomach of longing and also nostalgia - how much I want to travel, and see, but then memories and just a spirit of life. It's an escape."
Keaton Henson - You Don't know How Lucky You Are "Even the title makes me reflective. I don't know how lucky I am. The video is heartbreaking. I turn to this song to know true love is real, and somebody can love every little thing about you. I love how it's from a different perspective - of 'does he know?' - my heart breaks with Keaton's."
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats "This is one of my favourite songs. It's just beautiful. It makes me want to cry and be reflective and call up everyone I miss and tell them about life and build bridges."
College Youth - A Real Hero "This sing reminds me what it means to be human - to change lives. And you have proved to be a real human being, and a real hero - it's a beautiful sentiment and when I want more from everyday life, I listen to this. When I feel like I'm being too 'nice' and need to harden up, I listen to this. Life isn't about shutting off because it's easier - it's much harder to give all of yourself to every situation. It's something I always try and challenge myself to do."
