Hailing from Gao in north-eastern Mali, Songhoy Blues release their new single Al Hassidi Terei / Mali today (8 December, see below), ahead of album Music In Exile in February next year. Heading out for a series of European dates with Juliana Casablancas this week before their own shows this month, lead singer Aliou Toure tackles Q's five questions.
WHO would play you in the film of your life? Denzel Washington, he is my favorite actor, he plays really well, but I will have to give him loads of information, because nobody would know my life better than me.
WHAT are you currently working on? We are currently in London, doing plenty of little shows everywhere, after that will go to India for a few shows and to shoot a video, and then back to Europe for more shows.
WHY do you do that thing you do? I do my music with my friends before we wanted to get together to set up a band to play our music from the north of Mali, when we had to runaway from Timbuktu and Gao because of the Jihadist.
WHERE do you see yourself in ten years? I can imagine ourself the band Songhoy Blues touring all over the world after a few albums, happy to have made our music successful.
WHEN will there be a harvest for the world? A perfect world, would be a world with no war, no hunger, just happiness and peace. The only way to make this happen is education for everyone.
