GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR

Biography

Springing from the same fertile Montreal scene that would later produce Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s apocalyptic fusion of post-rock and classical music made them a unique proposition at the end of the 90s. With many of their songs clocking in at around the 15-minute mark, a nine-piece line-up including violin, viola and cello and a willful awkwardness, they were never going to be MTV staples, but their atmospheric, crescendo-laden sound – owing more to Ennio Morricone than conventional rock - made them underground darlings. The band has been on indefinite hiatus since 2002.
