STEREOLAB

Biography

Formed by Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier from the ashes of McCarthy, favourites of the Manic Street Preachers’ Nicky Wire, Anglo-French Marxists Stereolab’s blend of Krautrock drones and kitsch 60s pop stylings swiftly gained them a cult following in the early 90s. Even when co-opting such disparate styles as bossa nova and lounge pop they still have an instantly recognisable and unique sound. For many years, Sadier’s sing-song style was offset by Mary Hansen’s backing vocals, until the latter was killed in a 2002 road accident. They’ve lost their way in recent years, but their earlier work still sparkles

Stereolab are sublime sophisticated psychedelia and have certainly not lost their way. Their sound has simply developed and their musicianship has has become second to none in the pop world. They will always sellout gigs and sell records. They are also one of the most hardworking and prolific bands I know, who also come to think of it, never sold out: true independents
