| Led by the mercurial Paul Westerberg, Minneapolis's Replacements were hotly tipped contemporaries of R.E.M. who failed to break into the big league. Westerberg's poetic lyrics graced some of the 80s greatest lost tracks, while their sound evolved from thrashy punk to Springsteen-esque classic rock. |
|
|
Initially called Dogbreath, then The Impediments, before finally settling on The Replacements, the band came together when Westerberg heard half-brothers Bob (guitar) and Tommy Stinson (bass) and drummer Chris Mars rehearsing. Westerberg quit his Rush covers band and The Replacements. heroically drunken gigs quickly became a fixture on the Minneapolis-St Paul live scene, despite their bassist being just 12 years old.
Debut album Sorry Ma Forgot To Take Out The Trash appeared on local label Twin/Tone in 1981, followed by the Stink EP a year later. Both were characterised by short, aggressive punk bursts, although there was already noticeably more melody present than in the work of their hardcore contemporaries.
With 1983's Hootenanny, the band expanded their palette, taking in elements of country, blues and folk, but it was Let It Be, released the following year, that first showcased their talent to full effect. Featuring Peter Buck on guitar on opener I Will Dare and including Westerberg.s most heartfelt lyrics yet on the likes of Answering Machine and Unsatisfied, Let It Be was a tour de force that brought the band to the attention of the major labels.
By the time of 1985.s Tim . another powerful collection, featuring their genuinely chilling boozer.s ballad Here Comes A Regular and produced by Tommy Ramone . they had signed to Sire records. However, all was not well, and Bob Stinson left the band shortly afterwards, with his substance abuse cited as the reason. Pleased To Meet Me (1987) was recorded as a trio, with Westerberg on guitar, before Slim Dunlap joined as Stinson's replacement. By this time, the band's punk roots had been left far behind, with the poppy Alex Chilton . their tribute to Big Star's frontman . their most commercial track to date. Yet the album stalled at Number 131 in the USA.
After the commercial failure of Pleased To Meet Me, Don't Tell A Soul (1989) was an unashamed attempt to break the charts and seemingly made for radio, yet it too failed to sell. By this time, Westerberg had started recording solo tracks with a variety of session musicians, yet this became The Replacements. final album, 1990's All Shook Down, and the band ground to a halt the following year.
After the band split, Westerberg embarked on a solo career proper, but so far he has failed to even match The Replacements. success. Tommy Stinson is currently a member of Guns N.Roses, but his half-brother Bob was less fortunate: he died in 1995, aged just 35, after years of abuse.

Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash
Twin/Tone, 1981

One-paced thrashy punk debut.
The Replacements debut album was not a sophisticated start to their career, its 18 Ramones-influenced tracks racing past in a blur. Highlights include the lust-stricken Customer (Im in love with the girl who works in the store but Im nothing but a customer) and the nod to Minneapolis neighbours Husker Du on Somethin To Du. Elsewhere, the deliberately dumb I Hate Music (Its got too many notes) is entertaining and Johnny Thunders tribute Johnnys Gonna Die prophetic, but Sorry Ma is by no means a classic.

Hootenanny
Twin/Tone, 1983

Country, blues and folk get added to the mix,
After releasing the throwaway eight-track EP Stink in 1982, The Replacements knuckled down and released the more expansive Hootenanny the following year. Incorporating elements of country, folk and blues for the first time, it isnt an unqualified success, but the likes of Color Me Impressed and the Beatles-influenced Mr Whirly pointed to a band with potential. It also features a surprise in the superb, synth-led power ballad Within Your Reach, recorded solo by frontman Paul Westerberg.

Let It Be
Twin/Tone, 1984

A more mature direction pays dividends.
Let It Be found The Replacements moving away from their sloppy garage-punk to create one of the defining American albums of the 80s. Centred around four astonishing ballads Androgynous, Sixteen Blue, Unsatisfied and Answering Machine the album is a showcase for Paul Westerbergs poetic, personal lyrics. Opener I Will Dare, meanwhile, features R.E.M.s Peter Buck on guitar and Favorite Thing is a life-affirming rocker. They even get away with including a Kiss cover (Black Diamond) and calling one track Garys Got A Boner.

Tim
Sire, 1985

Major-label debut sees no let-up in quality.
The rapturous reception accorded to Let It Be sparked a bidding war between major labels, which Sire won. Tim followed a year later and despite a muted production, courtesy of Tommy Erdelyi, Westerbergs strongest set of songs still win out. Kiss Me On The Bus, Left Of The Dial and Bastards Of Young are all anthemic rockers, but the real ace in the pack is Here Comes A Regular, a lyrically bleak yet beautiful snapshot of a perennial barfly. With horrible aptness, hard-drinking guitarist Bob Stinson left the band after Tim, and would die a lonely death a decade later.

Pleased To Meet Me
Sire, 1987

Three-piece add horns in pursuit of sales.
After the exit of Bob Stinson, The Replacements fifth album was recorded as a three-piece, with Paul Westerberg playing the bulk of the guitar parts. It found the band moving yet further away from their punk roots, with horns prominent on the single Cant Hardly Wait and I Dont Know. But the album peaks with Westerbergs love letter to Big Star frontman Alex Chilton (I never travel far/Without a little Big Star), while Skyway is a pretty acoustic number.

Dont Tell A Soul
Sire, 1989

Radio-friendly fare fails to fill stadia.
After two unsuccessful albums on Sire, the pressure was on to deliver a hit and Dont Tell A Soul was the point where The Replacements now a four-piece again, with Slim Dunlap on guitar aimed squarely for the mainstream. Well Inherit The Earth, Anywheres Better Than Here and Ill Be You boast glossy AOR production and stadium-friendly choruses, but its the more introspective likes of Achin To Be and RockNRoll Ghost that impress most. The gamble paid off in part, as it became the bands most successful album ever, but it still only reached Number 57 in the US.

All Shook Down
Sire, 1990

Westerberg solo, in all but name.
Originally intended as Paul Westerbergs debut solo album, All Shook Down ended up as the final Replacements album, despite largely being recorded by session musicians and only featuring all four band members on one song. The atmosphere is notably downbeat partly because Westerberg was drying out during its recording with much of the material dealing with the bands impending demise, ending with the valedictory The Last. There are still plenty of high points, most notably the opening Merry Go Round and Sadly Beautiful, with its nod to Bob Dylans Its All Over Now Baby Blue.

It's ironic they scrape in at 29 in this list. One of the very best rockandroll bands to have crossed the atlantic - unless you saw them you'd never really know how great they could be.
Westerberg is the last, best kept-secret genius. |

The phone works and the texting works, but the internet (email, browsing, etc...) does not work! My buddy and I sit right next to each other, he has edge (the older iphone) and i have the 3g but neither can contact the cellular network when trying to use e-mail or the web browser. Anyone else having this problem? or does anyone got a clue to why this may be? thanks!
