The boozy swagger of debut single 40 Days And 40 Nights led some to assume The Enemy were just another bunch of lad-rock hedonists. Actually, there was a burning social conscience at work that became apparent on album tracks such as You’re Not Alone, dedicated to those cast out of work by the closure of the Peugeot factory in the trio’s native Coventry. It was surely the snarling immediacy of the tunes, though, rather than frontman Tom Clarke’s well meaning but occasionally clunky lyrics, that sent We’ll Live And Die In These Towns to Number 1 in July.
