There was astonishment in the UK when Modest Mouse’s fifth studio album secured Number 1 in the US charts in March. Yet Isaac Brock’s Pacific North West outfit have patiently built a sizeable
cult following over the last decade and, with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr now adding melodic subtlety to Brock’s off-kilter writing, they were poised for the breakthrough.
It’s nevertheless an idiosyncratic hit record: loosely based around a nautical theme, it conjures up visions of a grunge Talking Heads, Marr describing its woozy, out-of-time feel as “music for hipster hobos”.
